Douala Métamorphoses
Douala Métamorphoses, c’est le nom de la quatrième édition du festival international d’art public lancé par doual’art, un centre d’art contemporain fondé par Didier Schaub et Marilyn Douala Manga Bell au Cameroun. L’objectif de leur festival : permettre aux artistes de se mettre à l’écoute des désirs des habitants de Douala afin de créer des œuvres d’art monumentales qui embellissent leurs quartiers mais surtout qui les aident à mieux vivre et à se forger une identité propre. Y gagnent les habitants mais aussi les artistes qui peuvent ainsi créer dans un contexte hostile où l’art n’est ni soutenu ni valorisé. Le documentaire accompagne les artistes dans le processus de création et d’installation des oeuvres d’art puis il suit les festivités qui animent les quartiers de Douala lors de leurs inaugurations.

DOUALA METAMORPHOSES is the name of the last edition of the international public art festival launched by doual’art, a unique contemporary art center of its kind in Cameroon. This documentary sets out to meet the founders, Didier Schaub and Marilyn Douala Manga Bell, who created in just 20 years a hotbed of African artists in the heart of central Africa. Their goal: to push artists to listen to the desires of the inhabitants of Douala in order to create monumental works of art that beautify their neighborhoods. Residents are delighted. The artists too. Thanks to doual’art, they can expose in a country where art is hardly supported nor valued. For these committed contemporary art lovers, although the continent has other priorities, art is essential as it helps to live better and to forge one’s own identity. This documentary features the artists in their process of creation and captures the festivities that highlighted the city for a full week in December 2013.
